What is Bee Bold Mendocino?
Bee Bold Mendocino is a grass roots movement to prevent the extinction of our bee and pollinator populations in Mendocino County. In partnership with Thanksgiving Coffee Company and Friends of the Earth, local citizens have mobilized to educate Mendocino County to the perils facing our pollinators globally.
The national Bee Bold movement was founded by the Friends of the Earth in order to preserve the lives of bees, with the focus on an immediate halt to the use of neonicotinoids (neonics) that have been identified as one of the main cause of the Colony Collapse Disorder or CCD.
In cooperation with Friends of the Earth, Thanksgiving Coffee Company formed Bee Bold Mendocino as a pilot project to create the first “Bee Friendly” County in California. Once this is done and the structure is created the goal is to effect this change in all outlining Counties.
A “Bee Friendly” county ensures shelter, forage (food) sources for bees and pollinators while creating an ordinance that will ban the use and sale of toxic insecticides that are killing our pollinators.
Why does Bee Bold matter?
Bees are an essential part of the ecosystem. 75% of the world’s food crops depend on pollinators, and without bees much of the world’s produce could not be grown and distributed.
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) states that “[The world’s vertebrate and invertebrate pollinators] are being driven toward extinction by diverse pressures, many of them human-made, threatening millions of livelihoods and hundreds of billions of dollars worth of food supplies”(ipbes.net).
Bees are not the intimidating insects that is often seen through their portrayal in media; they pollinate plants and ensure that the cycle of life continues. Bee Bold is making an effort to save the bees and, in doing so, save the biosphere.
Mendocino County is located in Northern California and because nature contributes so much to the identity of Mendocino, pollinators thrive throughout the community. A majority of the bee population decline is concentrated in the Northern American area. As inhabitants of that area, we plan to create a positive impact on the bee population and become a beacon of progress for the future by allowing Bee Bold Mendocino to come to fruition.
What is Bee Bold doing?
Through the creation of this website we wish to educate the community on the importance of bee populations and why it is pertinent to preserve these specimens.
With the establishment of a “Bee Friendly” county we will populate the land with forage, create “Bee Friendly” policies, ban the use of neonicotinoids, build bee havens, and introduce more companies into Bee City, USA.
Visit this page if you wish to learn how you can become more involved with the preservation of our pollinators.
